Weekend Hiking At Kerinchi Trail (Kuala Lumpur)

Hello fellow hikers & friends,

For this hiking article, I will be introducing to you a trail name Bukit Kerinchi (officially known as Taman Rimba Kerinchi) located at the edge of KL city center.

Kerinchi trail is a fairly easy to hike as the Kerinchi-Bukit Gasing loop distance is just about 3-4km. This trail is very popular especially during weekend as you will encounter many groups of hikers of various age and size doing their morning walk.

What I really like Kerinchi trail compared to the Jalan Gasing trail is that is much easier to get there when driving with ample free parking space. (Note: As comparison, on some occasion, I saw many cars got summon issued when they park at the residential roadside in Jalan Gasing area).

From the starting point of the hike, you will immediately start to notice that the facilities here is much better (ie. public toilet, picnic areas, both concrete and steel walkway, designated parking lots) which make your starting hike point much easier.

Good thing for you know is that Kerinchi trail is linked to Bukit Gasing trail at midpoint of the hike. (Note: You will often bump into "lost" hikers group that will ask for which direction to go back to their starting point which is either KL entrant side /Kerinchi or PJ side entrant/Bukit Gasing)

From my past experiences, it is definitely helpful to know that there's three different trail you can choose from here. Thats why you will notice different group of hikers ascend/descend from different point of the trails.

To make your life easier, here's the available trails you can choose.

  1. Trail 1 - (most commonly used by hikers) passing through the steel bridge and immediately going upward toward Bukit Gasing hill.
  2. Trail 2 - is nearby the security guard pondok/cemetry area (dense vegetation and passing through the small creek/river)
  3. Trail 3 that is close by to the small waterfall area (see picture)

No to worry though, as the trails is a loop, any route you decide to take will lead you toward same end destination, which is the Bukit Gasing area.

Key highlight of the trail for most people (ie. for Instagramers) will likely be the two "must see" bridges. I say this is because literally you will bump into newbie hikers asking the same question on where the bridges at and how soon to get there.

  • 1st is the steel bridge located at the starting point of the Kerinchi trail.
  • 2nd is the hanging wooden bridge across a small ravine in the Bukit Gasing area.

See picture below.

Creek area - lots of vegetation and low areas with water path (if you choose trail 3)

Do remember to always be safe, stay hydrated and have fun during the hike.

Total distance and estimated hike duration:

  • The trail distance is about 4 to 6km
  • The entire hike from start to finish take about 2.5hours.

How to get here:

  • To find the place, just Waze/Google for Taman Rimba Bukit Kerinchi (see map below)

Parking areas:

There is a small, designated areas for parking and usually is filled up fairly quickly. But no worry, as lots of hikers just park their car on the roadside and to date, no one get a summon ticket. So, I will guess is all right to park at the roadside.

Things to prepare before you come here:

  • Since this a small hill and can be covered in less than 2hours, literally nothing much to prepare in advance. Perhaps a bottle of water for hydration the most.
  • But I recommend you get a walking pole as some areas are quite steep and the pole will definitely come in handy for you.
  • For those of you with weak knees, do be cautious. There are lots of big steps throughout the different trails. So, you're knee definitely going to hurts as you take those hundreds of steps.
